Obama t shirt is not for the curious George

Come check out our new blog! http://www.wordans.com/blog/index.php

A restaurant owner in Marietta, Ga. has begun selling an Obama t shirt that has everyone talking... The problem is it has actually stirred up quite the controversy that is sure to spark some flames across the lines!

The shirt in question has the Curious George monkey eating a banana with the inscription "Obama 08". The obama curious george t shirt that is being sold has also caught the attention of the famous character's publishers who are rightfully threatening to sue the owner of the restaurant for copyright infringement. The curious george obama shirt has at least respected one point, it has made people think!

As I love parallels between Obama and George Bush, lets start a little debate. Is there a difference between depicting Obama as a cartoon monkey in this obama monkey shirt and making a caricature of George Bush as a monkey? I guess labeling a black man a monkey goes back to the old racist statement of black people being primates, and calling George Bush a monkey is just being realist... It's just sad to see people still have the ignorance to make racist statements, especially ones that are worn and advertised! What a race he has to go through, imagine what would happen if the Republicans get to attack him in the presidential nomination. They certainly won't portray him as a monkey, but they won't give him the king's treatment!

This brings us to the important job public websites like Wordans have to monitor their content. Copyright Infringement and Racist statements are of course banned from Wordans.com, lets just hope other companies keep the same ethical stance. We will have to stick to our user submitted content (so many great designs have been submited already!) like the Obama t-shirt design below, an other Wordans Original!

That is interesting about the racial comments thing. But in reality isn't everyone just a little be racist. I do not support intentional belittling of other groups, but it seems nowadays people are just so tightly wound up as everything being a racist comment. Yet as a society we go see comedy shows that are geared and generally involving racism. I am no expert on what exactly is or is not the best place to tell a joke about Italians. Although being Italian myself I am sure I am allowed any time.
I have also noticed no one said anything about George W Bush and his onslaught of monkiness. Which steers me to the question of: why the heck is it something that is being ridiculed as racist? Has Al Sharpton paraded about on another overblown issue about this yet? Sorry I am a bit behind on news. So it is a monkey, so it is a banana. So it is Obama 2008. (On a side note would this not define itself as a parody and null and void of copyright issues?) You can find monkeys in more than just Africa. And all races and colours enjoy bananas. If I put Jackie Chan’s name under that curious George would the Chinese call racism? But George Bush would be acceptable.
And to these publishers and racism fanaticism they should have fingers pointed at them for racism. I will not go into detail but if I was as idiotic as some people I could accuse the publishers of Curious George as racists. Come on look at the show it just drools it!
Which reminds me; I saw a computer desk advertised in a Target website page. It was a “Black Kid’s Computer Desk”, now for those reading between the lines unnecessary, it is a BLACK Computer Desk in colour and it is made specifically for children in mind. But, there was sooo much hate mail because of this. If we can only apply that conviction and motivation into assisting them how to find Canada on a map.

There is an interesting thing to note about comments and racism. Of course there are many direct ways a person can be offensive in a racist way but lets not overlook the fact that there are people out there who look for reasons to be offended. Lets say a person makes a comment that is obviously meant to be innocent enough, but if there is any possible way to connect it to a racial offense you can be sure someone will announce that distinction to that comment as if it were the primary objective.

I think you are both right about the general misuse of the racist card. However, in my opinion, this shirt clearly uses the image in a demeaning way. He probably had no mean intent and probably just thought it was funny, but again, African Americans do have a hard time enough to make it, and Obama is becoming a prime example of this.

Anyone ever stop to think how badly Curious George must feel, being compared to Obama?

Better than being compared to bush!

I see racism being played both ways. Obama states in his book that whites are evil and cannot be trusted. That is serious racial stereotyping from a person that wants to be my president. I have seen cartoon pictures of Bush depicting him as a monkey and its okay. So, the way I see this is people think it is okay for Obama to hate me for my skin color, but dont make funny pictures of him as a monkey.....whatever.

This tee shirt is an expression of the artists feelings about a subject. People should not take it so seriously and create controversy out of nothing.
